Lokkhi Chhele

Directed By: Kaushik Ganguly | Release Date: 26 August, 2022

Lokkhi Chhele (An Angel’s Kiss) is an Indian film produced by Windows. The spoken language of the film is Bengali (a regional language of India). The main story plays around Lokkhi, a newborn baby who has four arms. Not more than thirteen kilometers from the bustling town of Mohanganj, lies the tiny village of Hijalganj. In spite of its close proximity to the town, Hijalganj remains a quiet village yet untouched by urban influence. The local Royal family’s traditions is all that the village concerns itself with. One day, when a girl child is born into a lower caste family, the priests declare her to be a reincarnation of the Hindu deity, Goddess Lakshmi. Soon, disciples flock up in and around Hijalganj to catch a holy glimpse of the Goddess. Some sort of a tiny festivity emerges in and around the village, as the area becomes a pilgrim spot over night. A few days later, when three friends, Amir, Gayetri and Shibnath are passing the area on their way back from a wedding, their car breaks down. All three of them are junior doctors at the medical college in Kolkata. At night, they are unable to find a single room in Mohanganj as all hotels are booked because of the pandemonium surrounding the deity. The area is flooded with make shift shops selling kulo, shish, etc. – all objects for the worship of Goddess Lakshmi. Even a few TV channels seem to loiter the neighbourhood to fiver the phenomenon. Intrigued by such visuals, the three friends decide to quit the plan to leave for Kolkata and visit Hijalganj instead. Hence, three scientifically minded youths land up amidst a celebration of what could rather be called a business of faith. Torn between logic and religion, superstitions and unquestionable world beliefs, our story ‘Lokhhi Chhele’ depicts two sides of social thoughts, that co exist in spite of their contrasting differences. This film, inspired from a true story, depicts the shackles of human superstition and the power of human belief simultaneously. As it is inherent in the power of cinema to precipitate universal conversations – which is also in the nature of Kaushik Ganguly’s cinema to do the same, Lokhhi Chhele is rural story with a global appeal.
